Poetry Competition and Garden to Table

Hi everyone

Poetry Competition Reminder:

The Year 3/4 Syndicate is having our annual
Poetry Recital Competition  as part of our Oral Language programme during Weeks 8-10 of Term 3.

Each student needs to find a poem that they enjoy to practise at home (please see me if you are struggling to find a poem). Students will be encouraged to share the poem they have been practising with their own class.

Students in each class will then select the favourite 2x students from their own room to perform at our finals in the hall on Thursday 25th September at 1.30pm.

They will be looking for
Fluency
Pacing (not too fast)
Pronunciation
Expression
Volume (BIG Voice!)
Props and Costumes can be used

This was a very successful event for all last year.

Garden to Table

Thank you to all the parents and family members that came to help at Garden to Table on Tuesday. The students started in the garden with Mr Wilson. The students planted seeds into planter boxes and put up a string barrier to protect the garlic. In the kitchen the students made Irish soda muffins, vegetable stir fry and a smoothie- delicious!!!

Here are some photos from our Garden to Table session:

Cabbage Carrot Stir Fry

Sauce:

2 cups vegetable broth
½ cup soya sauce
2 Tbsp corn flour
2 cloves of garlic crushed
1 Tbsp grated ginger

Wisk all ingredients together in a bowl. Set aside.

½ large head of cabbage thinly sliced
6-8 carrots grated
2 onions thinly sliced
Other available vegetables chopped, grated or sliced thinly.

Place 2 Tbsp olive oil in fry pan.  Heat on number 7.  Add prepared veggies and stir fry until cabbage starts to brown. Give sauce a quick wisk to ensure corn flour is well mixed then add sauce to pan and stir until thickened.
Serve over hot rice.

Irish Soda Bread Muffins

Ingredients:

2 cups all-purpose flour
3 Tablespoons granulated white sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup salted butter
1 cup buttermilk (low fat is fine)
1 large egg, beaten
3/4 cup currants

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Use 2 butter knives to cut in butter (or use your fingers) until mixture looks like course crumbs.
In a small bowl, stir together buttermilk and egg until blended. Add buttermilk mixture to dry ingredients and stir to combine. Stir in currants and caraway seeds (if using).
3. Spoon batter into prepared muffin cups. Bake 15-20 min. or until cake tester inserted in center of one muffin comes out clean.
